Ways to live

Dorm vs private studio in Prague: which one suits you?

Dorm vs private studio in Prague: a dorm is usually the lower-cost option, but it typically means a shared room and often a bathroom and kitchen shared on the floor. A private studio at Rezidence Kandertova in Prague 8 – Libeň gives you your own kitchenette and bathroom for €570 per person a month in a twin studio, or €980 on your own, all bills included. Which suits you depends on your budget and how much privacy you need.

What a university dorm typically offers

Dorms – koleje in Czech – are the natural first choice for many students, because a dorm bed is usually cheaper than private housing, and you are surrounded by other students from day one. The trade-offs are just as typical: rooms are often shared by two or more people, bathrooms and kitchens are frequently shared on a floor, house rules are set by the dorm or university, and places are allocated through the university, often in rounds with deadlines and priority criteria. Standards also vary a lot between buildings.

Who should choose a dorm – and who a studio

Choose a dorm if a lower monthly cost matters most, you are happy to share facilities and you want a big student community arranged by the university – a good start for many first-year students.

Choose a private studio if you need quiet to study or keep unusual hours, if a shared bathroom is a deal-breaker, if you like to cook, or if you do not want to depend on an allocation round. It also suits visa applicants: once you have signed the lease we issue a free accommodation letter within 5 working days.

The twin studio: the middle ground

If a studio of your own is over budget, the twin studio sits in between. You share the room and its cost with one person, as in many dorms, but the bathroom and kitchenette are for the two of you only, and each of you has your own bed, desk and chair. A twin place costs €570 per person a month in Type 01 (13 900 Kč, indicative) or €670 in Type 02 (16 400 Kč), all bills included. Come with a friend or we match you – same gender by default, similar age and, where possible, a similar programme. Twin studios are currently offered on the 2nd floor.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private studio much more expensive than a dorm?

Dorm prices vary, so we can only speak for ourselves: a twin place at Kandertova costs €570 per person a month (Type 01) and a single studio from €980, with all bills and internet included.

Can I apply for a dorm and for Kandertova at the same time?

Yes. Our online application is free and commits you to nothing; you only need your passport or ID number and a photo of it. The booking becomes binding once you sign the short reservation agreement online and pay the €200 reservation.

What if I get a dorm place after booking with you?

If you do not sign the lease by the deadline, withdraw or cancel before move-in – for example because you got a dorm place – the €200 reservation is kept. A refused university admission or visa is not a reason for a refund either; the only full refund is if we cannot provide the accommodation because the occupancy permit has not been issued.

Is a twin studio just a dorm room by another name?

No. You share the room with one person, but the bathroom and kitchenette belong only to your studio and the building is brand-new.
